This week, Monday, I'm back to school. I'm now on my 3rd year in college! Wish me luck. Honestly, I didn't feel anything about this school year's come back. I wasn't excited nor bitter about it. I just went to school and learn or wait for my professors. After all, this week was fun. Thanks to my friends who made it possible! We're so ready to conquer our major. But honestly, are we?
THE COLLEGE HEADSTART
- Train Waking Up Early
Me having 7AM classes everyday makes it so important to practice waking up early. Although I'm a morning person, I still have this habit of waking up early but after few minutes knowing that I still have time for bed, my body just fall asleep again together with my brain. But I'm pretty confident that when it comes to time, I'm very disciplined. I always try to be punctual at all times because I hate waiting for late people so I know how it feels like when people wait for me, I don't want that. Sometimes life happens and I fail miserably but that's okay. I'm not perfect, after all.
One thing I know for sure is I wake up pretty early everyday like 5-7AM. Having to perform salah at dawn helps so much. But the reason why my body is already trained to wake up early no matter what time I sleep, is because I just wake up. Let's be real, we know how to wake up early but we're just too lazy. We can't blame any event for our laziness, only ourselves. Your body can function no matter how many hours you slept, even when you didn't. For as long as you discipline yourself to avoid doing unnecessary things at night, get things done out of focus, get enough sleep, and stop being a lazy ass, then you'll wake up early. Do this for a week. You'll see changes on your body clock.
- Set Up Your School Supplies
I didn't bought lots of school supplies this year because I know I won't need them and I don't like wasting money. Because my grades won't be needing that cute paper clip. Only buy the things you know you'll need. And if you still have pieces to buy that wasn't included on your first batch of school supplies, the bookstore or stationery shop doesn't stop selling their products, that's for sure. I only have 7 classes this year and I'm sure I'm not going to need lots of notebooks because professors will provide hand-outs and books to buy. So I bought 2 notebooks (A5 and A3) for Accounting and other lectures, 2 black pens, correction pen / wipe out, index cards, post its, yellow pad, calculator, highlighter, and file folder. I like to weigh my bag pretty light because I don't like stressing over stuff that I don't need in my bag.
- Organize Your Laptop Files
Having too much files on your laptop is unhealthy. It means, you're so lazy deleting useless stuff in your laptop. Don't worry, I wrote a blog post about organizing your laptop files. As a blogger and a student, it's always a must for me to clear out and organize my files to avoid stressing over things that was my fault in the first place.
- Listen Carefully & Take Notes
Darling, I know it's hard when it comes to writing mostly everything your professor's discussing but let me tell you that it will be worth it. I've noticed that most of my professors' saying are on my exams. Just listen carefully and write smartly. And if you can't control your concentration at the moment, record the discussion and review it when you're feeling active already.
Although one of my professor last year announced that he doesn't like being recorded whilst I was recording him (yap, caught the whole statement), and according to him, he could file us a case because it was illegal because we didn't ask his permission to record his discussions. I promise you, it was one of those nervous moments. Just a tip, record the discussion unrecognizably. Unlike what I did, I record him as if I'm a journalist. Haha.
Note, I wasn't the only one recording him. We were bunch.

- Stay Focused & Beat Procrastination
Procrastination is something we all struggle but there are ways to beat procrastination. Thanks to resources for sharing tips to do it. I myself, is a procrastinator but this year I'm going to try to beat the eff of it to get better grades and stay focused. I'm on my third year and just got my major, it's a big deal. I have to do good or do nothing at all.
Last few weeks, I was trying to publish posts twice a week. But since school is back, I think I'm going to publish new blog post once every Sunday. You know, I need to prioritize things and I know you understand that my academics are my priority at the moment. I'm still going to post every week, that's for sure. I think there will be a time where I will be posting twice a week. I'll keep you updated on Twitter, follow me @fadsaburkair.

- Speak Up
I'm so shy when it comes to public speaking, I don't like reciting in class, I don't like impromptu speeches and debates. I do those things though, but not all the time like if I have the chance to not do it, I won't. And I'm sure there's someone out there that could relate with me. I think that the reason why I don't like public speaking is because the pressure gives me so much anxiety, it's unbelievable, I think I could break down in any moment. But this year, I'm going to try to work on that because I think it's a must! I'm on my 3rd year for pete's sake. I'm not really worried with my grammar nor the way I speak, it's just, I might get irrelevant and people will think "what is she talking about", if you know what I mean. I'm kind of a perfectionist. But I do love reporting in class because I get to prepare for it.
Actually it's a must for every college student to speak up in any form. To ask something important in class, clarify things to professors, point out your professor's mistakes (that's fine, for as long as you're right, because you can help your fellow students and your professor for doing this), and stand out in class. But the best thing you can gain by speaking up is confidence. That's really important in college.
So if you're like me, let's achieve something together this school year, love public speaking.

I sure am not the best student but I just thought I could help you and myself do better in college this year and so on by sharing this headstart for college. It's something college students must know and practice.

DeleteThese are very helpful tips, Fads! I am also in my third year in college and we're in the same major which is Marketing. We're already on the second week of classes and oh god, my professors already gave us a lot of tasks and projects to do for the whole sem. Adding the pressure and stress are my obligations as a vice president in Letran Junior Managament Society and managing editor in our school's paper, The Shield!
ReplyDeleteGood luck to us, Fads! May the odds be ever in our favor. :)

DeleteHello, Fads! I can totally relate to this. It's actually a good thing that you're looking forward to loving public speaking. I myself had that problem too when I was in college. Even when I know the answer to my professor's questions nor even when I have some thoughts to share, there are times that I just can't find myself speaking up. But no worries, you still have a lot of time to overcome this and I know that you'll do great. Good luck and enjoy your remaining days in college! Because believe it or not, you'll miss it someday. And that's for sure! ;)
